The following images show just how hazardous (and at the same time safe) our sport can be.

The car in question rolled onto the guardrail between station 9 and the starters stand (see track map) during a race at Grattan Raceway on August 13th, 2000.  The driver walked away from this incident in part because VERY alert and highly skilled, volunteer workers responded quickly.  Safety equipment (both personal and in his car) that are mandated by the rules also contributed to his overall protection.  Click here if you're interested in viewing some great in-car video of the incident.  Its 6.76 MB so, depending on your download speed capabilities, it may take a while.
